Can a Mixed-Race Baby Born in China Acquire Chinese Nationality?

 Love Across Borders Baby’s Nationality

Nowadays, many foreign friends follow their husbands/wives to work and settle in China, get married and have children, and create their own happy small families.

There are more and more foreign babies and mixed-race babies in China. So, what nationality should a mixed-race baby born in China belong to?

There are two situations:

1. If one of the parents is a Chinese citizen, then the baby can be of Chinese nationality but cannot have dual nationalities at the same time.

If the baby has been identified as a foreign nationality at birth, or if the parents have obtained permanent residency or become foreign citizens in another country, the baby cannot have Chinese nationality.

2. When both parents are foreigners, even if the baby is born in China, the baby must adopt the nationality of either the father or the mother and cannot apply for Chinese nationality.
